Hand Embroidered Notebooks + Giveaway!

March 16, 2014

My church is beginning a new series called "Route 66".  Over the next 66 weeks we will be going through every book of the Bible (one each Sunday) and to say the least, I'm very excited! I always take notes during church services and Sunday schools, so I wanted to have a notebook that was used JUST for this series.  How cool will it be when I finish this 66 weeks and have a summary of every book of the Bible in one notebook?

I've always been a huge fan of Moleskins.  If you've never tried out this notebook, you should.  They are a tad bit expensive, but to me, they are worth the money! One of the big bonuses to having a Moleskin is that they are very easy to customize. Here's how I made mine note taking ready:

M A T E R I A L S

- Moleskin Cahier Journal; I get the Kraft colored notebooks.

- Embroidered Thread

- Embroidery Needles

S T E P S

There are really no structured steps to take.  If you don't know how to embroider, check out my embroidery tutorial on the straight stitch and the lazy daisy and you can make this flower design in no time!  If you are an avid embroiderer, I would check out Etsy or Pinterest (I found a lot of ideas when I searched "embroidered notebooks" on both sites) for embroidery designs to use on your notebook!

I used the lazy daisy to create the petals of the flowers and I used the straight stitch to make the stems, leaves and yellow circle in the middle of the petals.  Use your imagination for this!

While you are embroidering these, remember to be as gentle as possible with the cover of the notebook. It's pretty sturdy, but if your needle has a thicker eye, it will take more effort to pull it through the cover so don't pull too hard or you will rip it!

Here are some other ideas:

-Guitar (if you write music) or other instrument

-A Bible verse or inspirational quote

-Your initial or monogram

-A feather

-Your newly married name (ex. Mrs. Smith, in cursive)

-The word "think"

-The word "recipes"

It can be or say anything, and these also make great gifts!

Disclaimer: this picture has absolutely #nothing to do with the caption. Sorry...but we should all really be used to that at this point, right? 😅 || There’s this song I’ve been listening to a lot lately (...probably too much). One of the lines says, “Even when I was your foe, still you fought for me.” That’s when it hit me: “How many times did I act in rebellion to God this week?” Definitely too many times. Every arrogant, prideful thought, spiteful action, lazy deed, or selfish motive was, in teacher terms, like whispering to my friend while God was teaching. The lyrics say it all: God, who cares for me, loves me, wants only good, righteous things for me, still fights for me despite my rebellion. All I can hope is that my students experience this brand of love through me this year. I hope they know that even when they talk during the lesson, ignore the work I expect them to complete, or get mad and leave, I still love them, and care about them, and want what’s best for them. || Goodness that was...a lot. 😳 Anyway, how’s your Friday night going? Mine is obviously a very deep, reflective one. 😅🙃 (Also, could I get more obnoxious with the emojis? I guess we’ll just have to see...)

Two beautiful truths keeping me hopeful tonight after a heavy day: • 1. “And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the sinfulness of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.” Colossians 2:13-14 • 2. “And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:17

This week is so good I’m not even counting down to Saturday! *knocks on wood* 😳How’s everyone else’s week going?!

In case you haven’t heard, there were no further cuts to our public schools, and no funding will be used in charter schools at this time! Guys, this is huge: they heard us. We protested, and our chants, social media posts, and phone calls influenced their decision to override the veto of the original budget, and then to pass a budget that does not harm education further. The biggest thing: they heard us. Our voices matter; YOUR voice matters. If you called yesterday, thank you! You helped save the education of millions of Kentucky’s youth! We did that, together—so cool. Now it’s time to vote. 💪🏼

If you’re watching your Kentucky teachers protest and fight for funding for public schools, wondering how on earth you can be a part of this, I have a job for you! If you live or work in Kentucky, you can call the legislatures’ message line (800-372-7181) to voice your opinion to your local senator and representative! It’s so easy, guys. Call the number and a very nice, friendly person will answer the phone to ask for your address and name. Then, all you have to do is tell them, “I want more funding to go to public schools, not charters.” Done. Your voice counts. Your voice is important! Even if you are a student/minor, your phone call will count and go a long way. Put that smartphone to use this Saturday morning!

I would have enjoyed teaching and being with my students much more than protesting today. I wish I could have walked into school like any other day: lesson planned, kids all crazy and pumped up, ready to end this amazing week. However, there are things in life worth fighting. My students are definitely worth that fight, and much more.
